Donated by the family of Willie Cole
This door is from the recent Willie
Cole Exhibition in the Elaine
Jacob Gallery at Wayne State
University. Cole is an international
artist whose work is in the
Museum of Modern Art in New
York, among others. Dozens of
salvaged, scuffed-up wooden
doors made up the installation,
rotating on vertical poles, each
labeled with a single word or
phrase — ''freedom, “death,” or
''Christianity.'' It was a free-association
maze, triggers for
thoughts, pieces of an episode,
morally loaded concrete poetry.
