Title: Sandwich-board door
The children’s art on the door is
from a class project at Harms Elementary
School in southwest Detroit.
Fourth- and fifth-graders
were introduced to a United Nations
Charter on the International
Rights of the Child. Valdez
worked with the kids twice a
week for a month on paintings,
drawings and wood sculptures
related to the charter. The sandwich-
board style is reminiscent of
the Depression, when signs were
worn by people looking for work,
food or as a protest.
