New light on old materials to be showcased at Urban Alchemy

Architectural Savage Warehouse teams with CAID in second annual event

DETROIT – The Architectural Salvage Warehouse of Detroit (ASWD) will join with the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) in presenting Urban Alchemy on May 24th, 2007. “Urban Alchemy”, is the second annual fundraiser for ASWD, and will feature the work of 19 well-known Detroit-area artists.

“The collaboration with CAID is an exciting one,” said Carolyn Mosher, executive director of ASWD. “The CAID facility is only a few blocks from our location, allowing both organizations to conveniently showcase their activities.”

ASWD is a non profit organization dedicated to salvaging useable materials from the deconstruction of old buildings and facilitating their use in both rehab and new construction projects. The mission of the organization is to recycle the high-quality, valuable, and historic materials often found in these buildings into use as part of contemporary building projects rather than ending up in landfills.

As part of the Urban Alchemy event, the participating artists will be using old windows to create exciting new art pieces. Those works will be available at auction during the course of the evening.

Additionally, there will be musical entertainment at both ASWD and CAID, as well as food and beverages for kids and adults. Transportation will be provided between the two venues, although patrons have the option of taking the short stroll which will pass a collection of colorful banners, pennants, and posters.

This annual event was a terrific success in it’s inaugural year and, with the expanded activities planned for 2007, this is sure to be a “must” for Southeast Michigan art lovers and supporters.
